Reading challenges are something I have done since the start of our homeschool journey, and they have worked really well for our family. On top of regular daily reading, I set challenges for my kids at different times throughout the year (usually school holidays), to motivate them to do extra reading. I choose a topic or time period eg. WWII, and source a bunch of excellent titles within that topic. I set a designated time frame (21 days seems to be just right), and they then get through as many books as they can in that time. Each occasion that we have done this, I have found my children love the challenge of trying to get through more books than usual, and they also come out with a deeper understanding in whatever the chosen topic is.
I will leave it up to families to decide whether or not you have a 'prize system' in place upon completion of the challenge. For my children, we do a $20 voucher for their favourite bookstore if they finish the challenge in the time frame... but this is entirely a matter of personal preference.
Below, you will find a compilation of these challenges including free print outs for your child to track their progress. I would recommend contacting your local library or second hand bookstore to source these titles.

My WWII reading challenge is a great one for late primary/early high school students. It includes Historical fiction and biographies, and will cover a lot of WWII history through story telling. Cosy up with a pot of tea and enjoy these fun and fabulous titles together as a family. If you aim for 2 per week, you will get through this list of 6 short reads in just 21 days. These stories are suited to all ages and will have you laughing, crying and falling in love with some wonderful characters.
Straight from my lounge room to yours comes this 5 Book challenge. Following up from Family Read alouds 1A comes Family read alouds 1B. Another list of some of my family favourites that are suited to all ages. These reads are slightly longer than the ones in 1A so I have included less titles for this challenge.
This reading challenge is designed for girls who have recently started to read independently. These beautiful 'first chapter books' have (mostly) shorter sentences and also scattered illustrations throughout. A couple of them are part of a series so if your child particularly enjoys them, you might consider sourcing more.
A master goldsmith, a slave girl, a prince, Pharaoh's daughter... These are just some of the intriguing characters you will meet on this reading journey throughout ancient Egypt. These books vary in length and difficulty but are recommended for ages 11+ and not recommended for sensitive readers.
This would have to be one of my favourite reading challenges. Take an adventure alongside some amazing characters and see the perseverance and courage shown as they overcome some truly difficult obstacles. A mix of older classics and some more modern ones, this challenge will suit competent and proficient readers.
